"The Screwtape Letters" (1942)
"The Screwtape Letters is a satirical Christian apologetics novel written in epistolary style by C. S. Lewis, first published in book form in February 1942. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior demon, Screwtape, to his nephew, a junior "tempter" named Wormwood, so as to advise him on methods of securing the damnation of a British man, known only as "the Patient" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Screwtape_Letters )

Я так понимаю, кусок от огромной антологии "The Vampire Archives: The Most Complete Volume of Vampire Tales Ever Published" (2009), посвященной Харлану Эллисону.

"Counter-Clock World" (1967)
"Абсолютное оружие" ("The Zap Gun", 1967)
"Counter-Clock World" написан на основе рассказа "Your Appointment Will Be Yesterday", опубликованного в августе 1966 в журнале "Amazing Stories".
Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) "The Haunting of Hill House" (1959).
Англовикипедия: "The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 novel by author Shirley Jackson. Considered one of the best literary ghost stories published during the twentieth century, it has been made into two feature films and a play. Jackson's novel relies on terror rather than horror to elicit emotion by the reader, utilizing complex relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the characters’ psyches".

"The Dragons of Babel" (2008).
Locus": "Fantasy novel set in the world of The Iron Dragon’s Daughter. A war-dragon crashes in a rural area of Faerie, setting young Will on a series of adventures."
Locus Online: New Books, early January 2008: "Fantasy novel, set in the same universe as the author's acclaimed The Iron Dragon's Daughter (1994), about a war-dragon of Babel that lands in the post-industrial world of Faerie."
Англовикипедия: "The Dragons of Babel ... follows the plight of a young man named Will Le Fey after a crippled dragon takes up residence in his town and inside his mind. Much like the Iron Dragon's Daughter, the Dragons of Babel subverts fantasy tropes while it explores the extremely dark and gritty world of Faerie"

Из интеврью журналу "Locus" (март 2009): "The Dragons of Babel is pretty obviously inspired by 9/11. I took a lot of topical stuff and scraped it off, because I did not want to have an allegory-of-contemporary-politics novel, but I wanted to get to the heart of 9/11 and our response to it. To simplify Will's predicament, he was given good reason to hate Babel, and then given the power to potentially destroy it. He has a more complicated choice than it looks like, but (again to oversimplify) he's given a choice between being Osama bin Laden or George W. Bush.
"Of course I was looking for a third response. A Polish poet, Adam Zagajewski, wrote a great poem called ‘Try to Praise the Mutilated World.’ I thought of it every day I worked on the novel. It's about how you can value life and the world when such terrible, hideous injustices and cruelties happen within it. The Tower of Babel, of course, is the symbol of all that's wrong with the world, the way some people see New York City as the symbol of all that's wrong with America. The criticisms of Babel and New York and America are right, and yet with all of that I believe they deserve to exist, to survive. Will never realizes it himself, yet that's his task: to find a way to accept the world as it is."
Из рецензии в "Publishers Weekly": "In this triumphant return to the universe of The Iron Dragon's Daughter (1994), Hugo-winner Swanwick introduces Will le Fey, an orphan of uncertain parentage. After defeating an evil mechanical war dragon who has enslaved him and his village, Will finds himself displaced by war, first imprisoned in an internment camp and then transported to the many-miles-high city of Babel. On the way, he falls in with Esme, an immortal child with no memory, and Nat Whilk, a donkey-eared confidence man of superhuman abilities. Fusing high technology seamlessly with magic, Swanwick introduces us to a wide range of marvelous conceits, fascinating digressions and sparkling characters. His language bounces effortlessly back and forth between the high diction of elfland and thieves' argot to create a heady literary stew. This is modern fantasy at its finest and should hold great appeal for fans of Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys or China Mieville's novels"
June H. Keuhn в "School Library Journal": "Grade 9 Up—An unusual combination of Faerie, postindustrial Earth, and biblical places, The Dragons of Babel will immediately capture readers' interest. A war is going on, but the "dragons" involved are part machine and part magic. One crash-lands near a Faerie village and declares itself king. Teenaged Will, part mortal, is forced to become its lieutenant and carry out its commands to the villagers, which eventually causes him to be driven out after it is killed. He is rescued by female centaurs during a battle of giants and ends up on the train to Babel accompanied by Nat Whilk and his adopted daughter, Esme. The three of them wind up in underground Babel (think New York City with a postindustrial fairy twist) where he helps the downtrodden. In a world full of every fairy imaginable (and maybe a few that aren't), Will becomes the center of Tower of Babel itself. Readers will empathize with the teenager, who is struggling to find his place in this world, and growing both in stature and knowledge, and the zany characters who accompany him. Earthy, bawdy, and often brutal, it's a story that will keep science fiction/fantasy fans involved till the end."
Англоаннотация: "A war-dragon of Babel crashes in the idyllic fields of a post-industrialized Faerie and, dragging himself into the nearest village, declares himself king and makes young Will his lieutenant. Nightly, he crawls inside the young fey's brain to get a measure of what his subjects think. Forced out of his village, Will travels with female centaur soldiers, witnesses the violent clash of giants, and acquires a surrogate daughter, Esme, who has no knowledge of the past and may be immortal.
Evacuated to the Tower of Babel--infinitely high, infinitely vulgar, very much like New York City--Will meets the confidence trickster Nat Whilk. Inside the Dread Tower, Will becomes a hero to the homeless living in the tunnels under the city, rises as an underling to a haint politician, meets his one true love–a high-elven woman he dare not aspire to. You've heard of hard SF: This is hard fantasy from a master of the form."
17.02.2011
"Новая серия для всех поклонников НФ! Впервые на русском языке! Новый роман от дважды лауреата British Fantasy Awards и Писателя года (по мнению Eurocon - 1993). Смешение всех жанров и стилей в особой манере, присущей только Иэну М. Бэнксу"
"The Algebraist" (2004).
AJ: You have a new book out this month, The Algebraist, which is an Iain M. Banks, so presumably science fiction?
IB: It is, yes, but it’s not part of the Culture series. The idea was to write something that wasn’t a Culture novel that Culture fans would enjoy. It was quite complex in terms of details and the back story and so forth, and that held me up for longer than usual. It was always going to be a long book anyway, and it’s actually longer than I intended. It probably could become a trilogy, but for now it’s a standalone novel.".
Locus Online: Notable New Books, October 2004: "Far future space opera novel set on a remote gas giant planet awaiting its wormhole connection to the rest of galactic civilization; it's independent of Banks' Culture sequence of novels."
The Algebraist, a science fiction novel by Scottish writer Iain M. Banks, first appeared in print in 2004...
It was his third science fiction novel not to be based or set in The Culture, and the first not to be potentially in the same universe."
Из рецензии в "Publishers Weekly": "Banks (Look to Windward) pulls out all the stops in this gloriously over-the-top, state-of-the-art space opera, a Hugo nominee in its British edition. In a galaxy teeming with intelligent life-forms and dominated by the intensely hierarchical society known as the Mercatoria, the Ulubis system has been cut off from the rest of civilization for over a century as its citizens impatiently await the arrival of a starship carrying an artificial wormhole to replace one destroyed in a previous war. Fassin Taak is a Slow Seer, an anthropologist who studies the Dwellers, the ancient, enigmatic species that inhabits gas giants throughout the galaxy, including Nasqueron in the Ulubis system. Fassin's research contains clues to the existence of a secret wormhole network, one operated by the Dwellers and free from the repressive control of the Mercatoria. Unfortunately, the monstrous ruler of a nearby star system has also learned of this discovery, as has the Mercatoria itself. Now two enormous battle fleets converge on Ulubis, and Fassin must undertake a quest deep into Nasqueron to uncover the Dwellers' secret. This is an enormously enjoyable book, full of wonderful aliens, a sense of wonder and subtle political commentary on current events."
Англоаннотация: "It is 4034 AD. Humanity has made it to the stars. Fassin Taak, a Slow Seer at the Court of the Nasqueron Dwellers, will be fortunate if he makes it to the end of the year. The Nasqueron Dwellers inhabit a gas giant on the outskirts of the galaxy, in a system awaiting its wormhole connection to the rest of civilization. In the meantime, they are dismissed as decadents living in a state of highly developed barbarism, hoarding data without order, hunting their own young and fighting pointless formal wars. Seconded to a military-religious order he's barely heard of - part of the baroque hierarchy of the Mercatoria, the latest galactic hegemony - Fassin Taak has to travel again amongst the Dwellers. He is in search of a secret hidden for half a billion years. But with each day that passes a war draws closer - a war that threatens to overwhelm everything and everyone he's ever known."

(Sean Thomas).
The Genesis Secret" (2009).
1996 ("Absent Fathers").
"His first novel, The Genesis Secret, focuses on the region known as Gobekli Tepe"(с) англовикипедия
"Spanning the globe from the ruined castles of Ireland to the desolate wastes of Kurdistan, The Genesis Secret weaves together Biblical puzzles, scientific insights, the history of an 18th century hellfire cult – and the very oldest temple in the world."(с) описание с сайта автора
"Knox's well-paced debut offers some new wrinkles on the theme of the archeological discovery that will change the course of human history. British reporter Rob Luttrell, who barely survived a suicide bomber's attack in Iraq, is hoping to take things easy, but his new assignment, to cover a dig in Turkish Kurdistan, proves anything but routine. German archeologist Franz Breitner has found evidence of buildings at the site known as Gobekli Tepe that appear to be 10,000 to 11,000 years old, 5,000 years earlier than any similar structure. The excavation has aroused the ire of the locals, who place an ancient Aramaic curse on those working there. It may be no accident when Breitner is impaled on a pole. Luttrell teams with an attractive biological anthropologist, Christine Meyer, to solve the mystery of the site, which may be where the Garden of Eden was located. Readers will hope to see more such offbeat thrillers from Knox, the pseudonym of London journalist Sean Thomas."(с) Publishers Weekly
"In this epic thriller, a secret with shocking consequences is buried deep in the Middle Eastern desert
A remarkable discovery has been made in the far reaches of Kurdistan. A Western archaeological team has unearthed the oldest human civilization-older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge. Sent to cover the story is war reporter Rob Luttrell. He's just survived a Baghdad suicide bombing and wants only to return home to his child. What began as a fascinating assignment quickly turns dangerous as the site is sabotaged and someone is murdered.
Meanwhile, a Scotland Yard detective is fast on the trail of a series of grisly killings in the British Isles. As he attempts to unravel these elaborate acts of violence, he discovers there may be a link to the site in Kurdistan. The secret to both is an origin and a bloodline that will challenge everything the modern world knows about the origins of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
A debut thriller of spectacular sweep and brilliant turns, The Genesis Secret is sure to keep fans of Douglas Preston, Kate Mosse, and Raymond Khoury reading through the night."(с) англоаннотация

"Utopia" (2002).
Описание из англовикипедии: "Utopia (ISBN 0-385-50668-6) is a novel by Lincoln Child published in 2002. It is set in a futuristic amusement park called Utopia, a park that relies heavily on holographics and robotics. Dr. Andrew Warne, the man who designed the program that runs the park's robots, is called in to help fix a problem. But when he gets there, he finds out that the park is being held hostage by a mysterious man known as John Doe...
Utopia consists of five "Worlds", each modelled after different time eras.
The Nexus: A neutral setting between the Worlds.
Gaslight: Based on Victoria London.
Camelot: A medieval kingdom.
Boardwalk: A reproduction of a sea side amusement park.
Callisto: A futuristic spaceport above Jupiter's sixth moon.
Atlantis: A water park based on the lost continent of Atlantis (in the novel, Atlantis is still under construction, and is seen in the epilogue)."
Из "Library Journal":
"Child departs from Douglas Preston, his coconspirator on books like Relic, to craft this creepy tale of trouble at a techno theme park. Criminals take over the computer system and threaten bloody havoc if their demands aren't met. Can computer genius Dr. Andrew Warne save the day?"
Из "Publishers Weekly":
"A fantastic near-future amusement park is the setting for this techno-thriller by Child (coauthor with Douglas Preston of the Preston/Child bestsellers) in his first solo outing. Utopia, a Nevada amusement park extraordinaire, features several elaborate holographic theme worlds (like Camelot and Gaslight, which meticulously recreates Victorian England), all run by an ultrasophisticated computer system and serviced by robots. When a series of fluke accidents culminates in the near death of a boy on a Gaslight roller coaster, the Utopia brain trust calls in the original computer engineer, Dr. Andrew Warne. Warne arrives with his bristly 14-year-old daughter, Georgia, and sets to work solving the Gaslight problem, though he can't believe that the system is willfully malfunctioning, as the evidence seems to indicate. To complicate matters, Utopia's manager, Sarah Boatwright, is Warne's ex-girlfriend, and an obvious mutual attraction exists between Warne and Utopia systems controller Teresa Bonifacio. Just as Warne gets to work, violent attacks erupt all over the park, masterminded by an impassive psychopath known as John Doe and carried out by his cadre of henchmen, including a computer genius and a crack marksman. For three hours, Doe holds the park hostage, and Warne, Boatwright and Bonifacio race against the clock to foil his plans. Child creates a convincingly self-contained world, populated by amusing creations like a cyber-dog called Wingnut and clever descriptions of futuristic amusement park rides. Sluggish prose and an overload of technical detail slow the pace, but Child proves he is capable of fireworks (literally) at the rousing conclusion."
Pam Johnson в "School Library Journal":
"Adult/High School-Utopia, the largest, most technologically advanced theme park in the world, draws in revenue to match its size. When problems begin to show up with the Metanet, the system controlling the robotics in the park, no one suspects anything but a computing error. When Dr. Andrew Warne, designer of the Metanet and the robotics, comes to fix the trouble, bringing his teenage daughter with him, the two are immediately caught up in terrorist plots to frighten both staff and visitors. Child takes the story chronologically through one day's events, increasing the tension as time ticks by. Minutes are noted, emphasizing the amount of action occurring in a small segment of time, and events that may be happening simultaneously in another part of the park are also pointed out. In this not-too-remote future, the technology ranges from realistic, full-sized holograms to advanced communications systems. Dr. Warne carries most of the character development, but Angus Poole almost steals the lead. He is visiting the park when he becomes involved in rescuing others after a terrorist event. His background in both military and security training provides him with the ability to perform the physical action required. Together, Warne and Poole make an unbeatable team, but admirable secondary characters, including a robot, add to this fast-paced adventure."
Mary Frances Wilkens в "Booklist":
"Utopia, a futuristic theme park of immense proportions, is every kid's dream. With its location off the Vegas Strip, Utopia has become the tourist destination for families. In fact, about 65,000 people visit the park each day, and much of the credit for its technological marvels goes to Dr. Andrew Warne, a computer engineer who designed the highly secretive and enormously ingenious robotics system, the Metanet, which basically runs the park. When Andrew is called in under the pretense of exploring expansion of the current system, he soon learns the real reason behind his presence: to discover what could be behind the apparent breakdown of the Metanet. Eventually, he uncovers evidence of tampering with the system--from the inside. Even the confident head of the park, Sarah (Andrew's former colleague and lover), typically impervious to adversity, begins to worry when an interloper carries out a threat by sabotaging one of the attractions. Unable to shut the park down because of further threats of violence, Sarah leaves the safety of the thousands of patrons in Andrew's hands. Who could be behind such atrocities, and what is it they are after? It is up to Andrew and the engineering crew of Utopia to find that out. The blend of technological jargon and suspense results in a real thrill-a-minute read."

"Впервые на русском языке! От знаменитого создателя бестселлеров "Из глубины", "Золотой город", "Граница льдов"

Date: 2011-02-03 07:05 pm (UTC)
